We offer regular open workshops on a variety of subjects and technology. For a schedule and to register, students should use the UM Undergraduate Education Workshops Program registration system. Faculty and Staff should use the Teaching and Technology Collaborative registration system.

Video Editing with iMovie
An introduction to video editing using Apple’s iMovie. In this class we cover setting up a video project, importing your footage, basic video and audio editing tools and techniques, title creation and options for sharing the final version of your project.

Video Camera Basics
In this hands-on class, learn about the video cameras available to you as an LSA affiliate from Instructional Support Services. From pocket and palm-sized camcorders to HDSLRs with interchangeable lenses we will discuss the pros and cons of each camera, show video samples from each, and field questions regarding their usage.

Video in PowerPoint
Learn best practices for embedding video directly into your PowerPoint presentation so it plays every time. We will cover how to digitize DVDs and save YouTube videos to a computer, video basic video trimming, and embedding your final video into your Powerpoint Presentation.

Photo Slideshows in iMovie
Learn how to make video slideshows using still images with Apple’s iMovie. In this class we discuss best practices to ensure optimal picture quality, importing your photos, structuring your story, editing tools and techniques for creating dynamic slideshows, recording voiceovers and adding music tracks, and creating a final video slideshow. This class has a heavy emphasis on media management when working with University computers.

Online Fundraising with Kickstarter
This class covers the step-by-step process of creating a successful online fundraising campaign using Kickstarter. Learn tips to making an engaging video and writing a succinct project description, learn how to set up enticing perks and how to communicate with your donors effectively. Creators of previously funded and unfunded Kickstarter projects will share their experiences, the do’s and don’ts, ins and outs of online fundraising.

Video Editing with Final Cut Pro X
An introduction to video editing using Apple’s Final Cut Pro X. In this class we cover setting up your video project, importing your footage, basic video and audio editing techniques, title creation, media management, and sharing your final video project.

Web Design with Weebly
Learn how to create a basic website with Weebly’s site builder. Weebly’s drag and drop user interface is friendly, easy to use, and allows users to build a fully functional, professional website in less than an hour. We will take some time at the beginning of the workshop to sign up for Weebly.

Designing Posters in Adobe Photoshop
Learn basic Photoshop poster design to create a poster for your film or event, real or imagined. Create posters for both web and print, and get your feet wet in basic design elements of how to represent your event in one image.

Intermediate

Intro to Color Correction in Final Cut Pro X
This short course delves into FCPX’s color correction tools. Learn how to use the Waveform Monitor, Vectorscope and Histogram in conjunction with the Color Board to color correct and color grade your video.

Motion Effects in Final Cut Pro X
An introduction to creating basic motion effects within Final Cut Pro X. This class will cover the many ways of altering your video from split-screening to using keyframes to create moving picture-in-picture sequences. Attendees should have basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro X. Note: This class does not use Apple’s Motion.

Creative Titles in Final Cut Pro X
Learn tips and tricks to creating great looking titles using Final Cut Pro X’s title tool. This short course also touches on basic typographic principles and best practices when using text in video.

Video Compression with Compressor
An introduction to Apple’s Compressor video compression software. This class covers video compression principles and techniques and how to create and apply custom compression settings to videos. Attendees should have basic video and video editing knowledge.

Color Correcting with Adjustment Layers in Final Cut Pro X
Learn to create and apply an overall color grade to a project with one set of controls using adjustment layers. In this class you will learn how to build an adjustment layer in Motion and how to apply it to your project in Final Cut Pro X.
